Shakespeare’s Sonnets are amongst the best-loved poetry in the English language. The theme is love, and the love is full of mystery: we do not know who commissioned the sonnets – indeed if anyone did – and to whom they were addressed. We are not even certain of the sex of the person – or persons – to whom they were addressed.
What remains undeniable is the popularity of the Sonnets. Sonnet 116, Let me not to the marriage of true minds, remains one of the most popular readings at weddings. This selection seeks to reproduce the best loved of the Sonnets in a format and size designed for reading while waiting for a bus or sitting on a train: a constant companion.
