‘Anti-authoritarian Radical, Shelley was not particularly popular in his life. Atheist, republican, socialist, vegetarian and vigorously libertarian in his sexuality, he didn’t really fit in…’

Shelley was the archetypal Romantic, right down to his drowning in 1822, aged 29, in a storm, followed by his cremation on the beach of the Gulf of La Spezia. This was grand gesture Romanticism.

Shelley has always had a particular appeal to the younger reader. His poetry combines a questioning of and resistance to authority with an optimism and idealism which is particularly attractive. This selection aims to reproduce a broad range of his most popular work.
