Description
Christina Rossetti published her first collection of poetry the year after the death of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and quickly established herself as the heir to Browning in popularity. Such was her success that her publisher was able to accept collections for publication sight unseen.
She came from an Italian family with great artistic skills: not just her brother, Dante Gabriel, poet and painter, but her other two siblings were writers and her father was a poet.
Her writing is characterised by simplicity and directness. Her Christian faith finds a deep emotional expression in her poetry. Much of her writing is very familiar, such as ‘In the Deep Mid-Winter’. This is a representative selection of her work, containing many of her favourite poems
